Preserving Wildlife & Protecting Assets


The high costs of repairing and replacing commercial assets due to wildlife-related damage, costly penalties and bad publicity associated with harming wildlife, and the ineffectiveness of legacy deterrents, highlight the need for safer, more effective wildlife preservation and control solutions.

Proven Performance

Mining / Tailing Ponds

Horizon External Tailings Facility (ETF)

Horizon ETF integrated DeTect’s Merlin Detect & Deter and LRAD 1000Xi systems into the ETF. Radar-controlled Long Range Acoustic Devices (LRADs) and lasers prevented bird landings and demonstrated 97.5% effectiveness in responding to birds approaching the ETF.

Since 2009, Horizon Oil Sands has operated a leading-edge bird deterrent program to prevent mortalities related to the Horizon External Tailings Facility (ETF). The Merlin Detect and Deter system was deployed at the Horizon ETF utilizing technology originally developed for aircraft bird strike prevention. Radar-controlled LRAD systems and lasers prevent birds from landing on tailing waste ponds. The Merlin Detect and Deter system demonstrated 97.5% efficiency in deterring birds approaching the ETF. The system has proven highly effective with zero bird mortalities occurring in 2010 and 2011.

LRAD and avian radar partner, DeTect, Inc. were recognized by the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) during their 2012 Responsible Canadian Energy Awards ceremony when it presented its President’s Award to Canadian Natural Resources Limited for their Horizon Oil Sands Wildlife Management System.

Airports & Runways

Bologna, Italy

The airport in Bologna, Italy has successfully used LRAD systems since 2010 to significantly reduce bird strikes, protect passengers and aircraft, and preserve wildlife.

“LRAD has the advantage of being able to project loud, directed sounds towards the birds to affect their behaviour. LRAD can replicate the sound of various birdcalls, birds of prey, and even the sound of compressed air guns and other noisemakers. Its advantage is that it doesn’t require reloading ammunition or changing air tanks. Because of its effectiveness and versatility, LRAD units are an integral part of Bird Control Italy’s successful programmes to control bird and wildlife activity around our country’s airfields. Bird Control Italy recommends LRAD products for Bird and Wildlife management and control.”

Bagram Airfield
Located directly in a path migratory birds fly each spring, the hub of U.S. operations in eastern Afghanistan deployed LRAD and avian radar systems after several bird strikes caused millions of dollars in damage to aircraft taking off and landing at the airfield.

Asset / Property Protection


An LRAD 1000Xi system was implemented to safely remove hundreds of roosting vultures causing sanitation and safety issues at a petrochemical plant.

Fisheries / Agriculture


Herons preying on new hatchlings and young fish were costing a South Korean fish hatchery approximately $1.5 million in lost revenue annually. After deploying LRAD systems, hatchling and fish loss was reduced by 80%.

Large Animal Incursions


Arviat, Canada

Polar bears are a dangerous part of living in northern Canadian villages. Over the years, polar bears have grown increasingly accustomed to man resulting in several dogs and villagers being mauled or killed.

When polar bears damage property or attack people, they are either killed or relocated. Relocating bears using trained veterinarians, tranquilizer guns, and helicopters equipped with nets is an expensive and hazardous operation.

LRAD systems are providing a new way to humanely discourage polar bears from interacting with humans and moving them away from villages. In Arviat, law enforcement and wildlife officers used LRAD’s long range, intense warning tones to disrupt and deter bears from approaching the village, its dump, and other areas of human activity. With its near infinite variety of tones and modulations, LRAD systems ensure against habituation to provide a highly effective bioacoustic deterrent.

Airports / Air Bases (BASH)




The dangerous and potentially deadly effects of bird strikes on commercial and military aircraft were demonstrated by the heroic emergency landing of a U.S. Airways flight on the Hudson River in 2009. The FAA reports that bird strikes have increased 6-fold from 1,851 in 1990 to a record 12,003 in 2014. Over 142,000 bird strikes have been reported since 1990 costing the aviation industry more than $2 billion annually in aircraft damage and out-of-service delays.

Originally developed for public safety applications, LRAD systems are now in use around the world to steer birds away from airports and air bases.

Manually operated or integrated into remote command and control centers, LRAD is a humane bioacoustic deterrent that has proven effective in preventing aircraft bird strikes.

Drilling and mining operations that create large tailings ponds are particularly hazardous to migratory birds and wildlife. Animals are naturally attracted to the water sources, which often contain dissolved minerals that are lethal to birds and animals. A growing number of governments are instituting large fines and penalties for mining operations that fail to implement measures preventing wildlife access to toxic tailing ponds.
